Iceberg Writing Prompt

Sometimes things look simple on the outside, but underneath they’re much more complicated.

Think about an iceberg: what we see above the water is just a small part, while most of it is hidden below the surface.

Our own lives can be like this, too. People might notice the easy or fun parts: winning a game, getting a good grade, or finishing a project, but they don’t always see the effort, practice, challenges, and setbacks that made it possible.

Step 1: Design Your Iceberg Infographic

Use the iceberg picture (or draw your own). Divide it into two clear sections:

Above the water: What people see

Examples:

  • The finished piece of work
  • The winning moment
  • The good grade
  • The smooth performance
  • The confident smile
Write or draw the visible part of your achievement, skill, or experience.

Below the water: What people don’t see

Examples:

  • Practice
  • Setbacks
  • Trying again
  • Emotions
  • Time and effort
  • Help from others
  • Plans, drafts, failures
Add labels, keywords, small sketches, arrows, or color coding to show the hidden work behind what you do.

Add a title that sums up your message, like:
“More Than Meets the Eye” or “The Part You Didn’t Notice.”

Step 2: Write About Your Iceberg

Use your diagram to guide your writing. Write a paragraph (or more) explaining:

  • What people usually see on the outside
  • What they might not realize is happening underneath
  • Why the hidden part matters
  • How the challenges or effort helped you grow
  • What you learned about yourself through the process

Warm-Up Discussion Questions

What is something you’re good at that people might think is “easy,” but actually takes a lot of work behind the scenes?

When you work hard on something, what part do others normally notice, and what part do they not notice?

Think of a time you failed or struggled with something. How did that hidden effort help you improve later?

Who helps you “below the surface” — teachers, friends, family — even if no one else sees it?

Why is it important to remember that everyone has hidden challenges or effort that we don’t see?
