Flying Narrative Prompt

Prepare to write a narrative about this scene by building the details of your main character, the world she lives in, and the problem she might face.

Brainstorm together and record your ideas:

  • Character: Who is she? (Give her a name, age, and a little personality.) Where did she get her wings—born with them, created by magic, or given as a gift? What does she want most in the world?
  • Setting: Describe the world below her. Is it Earth as we know it, or a fantasy land? What details make this world unique (forests, rivers, cities, hidden dangers)? What is the time of day or season, and how does that change the mood?
  • Problem/Conflict: What challenge does she face? (e.g. people fear her wings, she’s searching for someone, she’s escaping danger, or she’s the only one of her kind). What’s at risk if she fails? Who or what might stand in her way?
  • Extension: Describe a moment of flight. Use sensory detail to capture the rush of wind, the sound of her wings, the view of the river below, and how she feels soaring through the sky. Write this scene so your reader feels like they are flying with her.
