Rain Day Media Writing Prompt

Artists and media creators make choices — colours, objects, backgrounds — that send messages and shape how we feel.

Your task: Explain how this image communicates meaning.

Ideas to expand on:

  • Main Idea: What feeling or message do you think the image is designed to create?
  • Supporting Details: Explain how features like the yellow raincoat, the umbrella, the rainy setting, and the blurred castle in the background contribute to that message. Examples: Point out specific parts of the image and describe their effect (e.g. “The umbrella makes the scene feel safe even though the weather is stormy”).
  • Conclusion: Summarise the overall message or mood of the image.

Extension: Transform the picture for a new purpose:

  • If it were a social media post, what short caption or hashtag would go with it?
  • If it were a book cover, what would the title be?
  • If it were an advertisement, what could it sell? Add a catchy slogan.

Warm-Up Discussion Questions

  1. Mood check: When you first look at this picture, what feelings do you get: calm, sad, hopeful, safe, something else? Why?
  2. Color choice: Why do you think the child’s raincoat is bright yellow, instead of another color? How does that change the mood?
  3. Symbolism: What might the umbrella represent besides just keeping dry? Could it symbolise safety, friendship, or something else?
  4. Background effect: The castle in the distance looks faded and blurry. How does that detail change the story the picture tells?
  5. Audience impact: Who might this picture appeal to the most: kids, adults, pet-lovers, readers of mystery stories? Why?
  6. Creator’s purpose: If this picture were on a book cover, poster, or advertisement, what message might the artist be trying to send?
