Merge Consciousness Experiment Picture Prompt

A scientist’s experiment to merge consciousness goes wrong, trapping two strangers inside each other’s minds. They must find a way to escape before their identities dissolve.

Instead of writing one long story, you will create a collection of short, connected pieces in different formats. Each piece will reveal a part of the mystery.

Step 1 – Build Your “File Collection”

Choose 3–6 “documents” to include. Examples:

  • Lab notes written by the lead scientist, showing the experiment’s progress and mistakes.
  • Interview transcripts with the two people involved — include moments where their thoughts overlap or they speak in unison.
  • Emails or text messages between the scientists and the participants’ families.
  • Snippets of shared memories written like diary entries.
  • Voice recorder transcripts where thoughts spill over mid-sentence.
  • Medical reports with strange or unexplained results.
Step 2 – Add Clues and Gaps

Decide which details to share and which to leave out — the mystery will be more engaging if the reader has to piece things together.

  • Hide key information in between lines.
  • Create subtle contradictions between documents to suggest that identities are beginning to merge.
  • Include unusual formatting (crossed-out lines, highlighted words, timestamps) to make it feel authentic.
Step 3 – Give It a Frame

Choose how the reader “finds” this collection.

  • Is it stored in a locked digital folder?
  • Did a whistleblower smuggle it out?
  • Is it being examined years later as evidence in a trial?

Write a short introduction (2–3 sentences) explaining how the file collection was discovered.

Step 4 – Optional Extras
  • Add a cover page with the experiment name and code number.
  • Include “CONFIDENTIAL” stamps, doodles in the margins, or faded coffee stains for realism.
  • Use different handwriting styles or fonts to show different voices.
