Map the Setting Picture Prompt

The person in this picture is standing in an incredible forest filled with towering trees. Before you write a narrative about this person and their journey, let’s explore this unique setting.

1. Imagine the Forest:
Think about what this forest might be like beyond what we can see in the image.
Consider these questions as you imagine:

  • How big is this forest? Does it go on for miles, or is it a smaller, hidden grove?
  • What kinds of plants and trees grow here besides the tall ones? Are there smaller bushes, ferns, or unusual plants?
  • Are there any water sources like a stream, a pond, or a waterfall nearby?
  • What kind of terrain is it? Is it flat, hilly, rocky, or uneven?
  • Are there any landmarks or special places within the forest (e.g., a giant fallen log, a cave entrance, a patch of sunlight, something built)?
  • What kind of creatures might live in this forest?

2. Draw Your Map: On a piece of paper, draw a map of this giant forest based on your imagination. Make sure to include:

  • The towering trees as a main feature.
  • Any other types of plants or trees you imagined?
  • Any water sources or changes in terrain?
  • At least three interesting landmarks or special places.
  • Mark where you think the person in the picture might be standing. You can even draw a small figure on your map.

3. Label Your Map: Give your forest a name and label the different parts of your map (e.g., The Whispering Falls or The Ancient Grove, or The Twisted Path).

Now that you have created a map of the setting, choose one of the landmarks or a part of the path on your map and write a paragraph describing it in detail. What does it look like, sound like, and feel like to be there?
